Dear Editor:

With the election fast approaching whom should sportsmen support? In the last presidential election 80% of hunters and anglers cast their vote for George W. Bush. Bush rewarded this support by launching an all out assault on the wildlife resources of the USFS and BLM lands, consistently favoring oil and gas interests over wildlife and water resources. He weakened enforcement of the federal clean air and water acts, and gutted federal protection for wetlands. With friends like that in Washington, who needs enemies?
John McCain was one of only six U.S. Senators to receive a 0% rating from the League of Conservation Voters, thus providing evidence that if elected he will carry on Bush’s anti-fish and wildlife policies. Sarah Palin and her husband both love to hunt and fish, but her environmental policies as governor have actually been to the right of Bush’s. She seems to be infected with the ‘frontier’ mentality that so many Alaskan politicians have. Alaska seems so big that no matter how much wildlife habitat is sacrificed for oil development they think there will always be plenty left. But if elected McCain/Palin will be in charge of fish and wildlife habitat in the lower 48, where it is already in limited supply and dwindling by the day.
The NRA has thrown their support behind McCain/Palin because of their staunch pro-gun rights views. Sportsmen need to think about what really represents the greatest threat to the future of hunting and fishing in this country; a government boogie man coming to take their guns away, or the loss of suitable habitat and public access to the point that there is nothing left for the common man to hunt and fish for.
Obama and Biden both have strong records on environmental protection, receiving 67% ratings on their voting record by the League of Conservation Voters. It is time for sportsmen to put some serious thought into whom their real friends in Washington are.

Sincerely,
Charles Frisk
